Yang Tai Chi Classes

My martial arts journey started in the Spring of 2005 with the Wushu Institute with Sifu Anthony Bates. He started the Wushu Institute in 1996 at the Wilkie House in Des Moines as their first after school program. I'd been interested in giving it a try for many years. I played various team sports as a kid and knew I would enjoy being part of a school atmosphere. I loved learning something completely different from anything I'd done before, and loved learning more about the history of our martial arts style and martial arts in general. We performed many demonstrations throughout the years at various festivals including Chinese New Year, Drake Relays, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, Celebrasian, Juneteenth, Chinese Harvest Festival, and various other celebrations in the martial arts community.

Wushu is a traditional Chinese martial art dating back to at least the 1600's. It was previously known as Chinese water boxing and it's movements are rooted in nature and animal movements. Tai Chi is an advanced hand form that is typically learned shortly before earning ones first black belt. Yang Tai Chi is one of the most popular forms of Tai Chi practiced around the world for it's numerous health benefits.

I have been teaching Yang Tai Chi since 2007 with the Wushu Institute and as of September 2019 am a Certified Tai Chi instructor with the Wushu Institute. I teach the 24 movement hand form to build a foundation of understanding the movements and applications before teaching other Tai Chi forms. Interested in taking a class? Sign up here.
